Found this video via Glenn Beck on Twitter. It’s a commercial for OnStar. Most people have heard of OnStar. It is the service that alerts emergency services when you are in an accident, unlocks your doors if you lock your keys in the car, and runs diagnostic checks on your vehicle. It is available on GM vehicles.
“Cop-Cam” OnStar Commercial – watch the video below.
In case you are unable to view the video, here is a summary: A Chevy Tahoe is reported as being stolen. OnStar notifies police who begin pursuit. During the chase, the pursuing officer is in communication with the representative from OnStar. When he pulls up behind a vehicle matching the description of the one that had been stolen, OnStar flashes the lights on the vehicle to confirm that the officer has found the right vehicle. After the target has been confirmed, OnStar shuts down the power to the vehicle, ending the chase.
This is advertised as a safety feature because it is a way to prevent dangerous high speed car chases. At first thought, this may seem like a good idea.
But wait… What service is doing this? OnStar. What vehicles come equipped with OnStar? GM vehicles. Who owns GM? The federal government.
This commercial shows us how the federal government, should they choose to do so, could shut down your vehicle (if you’re driving a Government General Motors car). But we don’t have to worry about that, right? Surely the government wouldn’t use this technology to target average, law-abiding citizens, would they?
Don’t be too quick to think that this is out of the question. No, I’m not some crazy conspiracy theorist. Look at everything the current administration has done to consolidate power and attack their enemies. They’ve taken over the car companies, financial institutions, and soon, if they have their way, the health care industry. They have appointed over thirty “czars” who were not approved by Congress and are directly answerable to the President. Lately, they have begun using their power to go after those who stand in their way of accumulating more power – Fox News, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and more.
Even if we assume that the administration would not use its powers to target average citizens who disagree with them, we must recognize the fact that they are accumulating the powers with which to do so. Even if the current administration would never do anything like this, they are making it so the next administration can.
The bottom line is this: The federal government needs to be out of the car business. Out of the health care business. Out of the banking business. Out of the media business. And out of our business.
This is not a Republican vs. Democrat issue. It is a matter of liberty and freedom for our children and grandchildren. I pray that my first reaction to this video ultimately turns out to be nothing more than a paranoid delusion. Time will tell.
