The Associated Press reports:
With President Barack Obama presiding over a historic session, the U.N. Security Council unanimously approved a U.S.-sponsored resolution Thursday committing all nations to work for a nuclear weapons-free world. [New UN resolution aims at nuclear-free world]
There’s a saying that comes to mind: If you outlaw guns, only outlaws will have guns.
We can modify that here: If you outlaw nuclear weapons, only outlaws will have nuclear weapons.
As with any other weapon, the existence of nuclear weapons is not the problem. The danger is the possibility of certain nations acquiring such a weapon, such as a desperate North Korea or a country like Iran with a President who wants to see Israel wiped off the map.
It is vital that countries around the world work to make sure that nuclear weapons do not get into the hands of the leaders of countries like North Korea, Iran, Venezuela, or a terrorist organization. But vowing to eliminate all nuclear weapons, including our current stockpile, is not the answer. This resolution will mean nothing to them. Diplomacy hasn’t worked. Sanctions haven’t worked. Why would one ever think that this would work?
In working towards this deluded vision of utopia, Obama and the other representatives from the nations in the Security Council are actually headed toward a world where evil, radical leaders have the only nuclear weapons.
