A recent Rasmussen poll shows that 12% of voters believe that most opponents of Obama’s health care plan are racist. 67% believe most opponents are not racist. 21% are not sure.
However, if you break down the numbers by political affiliation or race, the percentage of those who believe racism is a factor is higher among certain groups.
Among Democrats surveyed 22% believe most opponents are racist, 39% disagree, and 39% aren’t sure.
Among African-American voters, 27% believe most opponents are racist, 25% disagree, and 48% aren’t sure.
So 61% of Democrats in general believe that the majority of Obamacare opponents at least might be racists. 75% of African-Americans believe race either is or could be the reason why most oppose the President’s health care plan.
These Obama supporters are so blind. They cannot fathom the possibility that Americans oppose the President’s plan simply because they don’t like the plan. Why does race have to be brought into this? This is not a race issue. It is about excessive government spending, expanding the power of the federal government, and threats to individual liberties and choice. Americans don’t like the plan being proposed.
How quickly they forget that Obama was elected by a majority vote back in November. Obviously race was not a hindrance to Obama then. Have Americans so quickly spiraled into racial bigotry? Hardly. The problem for Obama is that he’s trying to turn his rhetoric into reality and many of the ones who voted for “change” are realizing that they don’t like it.
Are there some people who are racist and oppose the President because of the color of his skin? Sure. There are a small number of such people, just as there are some racists on the other side supporting his plan. Interestingly, among those who oppose Obamacare, only 1% believe the majority of the opposition is racist. The overwhelming majority oppose this for reasons other than race.
I oppose the President’s plan because I believe it is a bad idea (excessive costs and will naturally lead to rationing) and because it goes beyond the power given to the federal government in the Constitution. Race is not a factor for me. I know many who also oppose this plan for reasons others than Obama’s skin color. In fact, I don’t know of a single person who opposes the President’s plan because of his race.
The problem is that too many people in this country have not learned to look beyond someone’s race and see them as an individual, judge them according to their character, and agree or disagree with them based on a reasonable exchange of ideas. Those who believe the opposition to Obamacare is over the President’s race demonstrate their inability to see him as more than a black man.
Forget race. Don’t judge the hearts of others. Debate the issue. Let the plan stand on its own merits (if it is able), not on the color of the President’s skin.
